Animals Deprived of Shelter and Shade

Sufficient shelter should be available at all times and there should be adequate space for all of the animals to retreat from the rain, wind and sun. Unfortunately this important aspect of animal husbandry is often overlooked at roadside zoos. In many roadside zoo exhibits, the only shelter was in a tiny box or indoor holding area. Shelter and shade should be provided in the main display area as well so that the animals are protected when they are active.

These lions were locked outside of their shelter with minimal shade, privacy
and protection from the elements. The area underneath the wooden platform provided the only shade.

These elands had very little shade. Most of the animals congregated near a trailer which provided the most protection from the sun.

These olive baboons have very little protection from the sun and little privacy.
