Concrete Floors

Hard floors such as concrete and compacted earth are not acceptable. While these types of surfaces may be easier to clean and maintain, they can inhibit natural movements and be uncomfortable and physically damaging to the feet and joints. For terrestrial animals that enjoy digging, scratching and foraging, hard floors are just plain boring.

Although the Bowmanville zoo is accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA), it still houses some of its animals on hard surfaces in barren enclosures.
