Take Action
On April 3rd, the Ontario government introduced Bill 50, An Act to amend the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. If passed, the bill will finally make it a provincial offence to abuse any animal, including those kept in roadside zoos and it will establish the highest penalties for animal cruelty offences in the country. People who abuse animals will be eligible for jail, fines and lifetime ownership bans. It will also give the Ontario SPCA the authority to inspect zoos and other facilities and it allows for the establishment of specific regulations and standards for zoos.
When the government does the right thing, it is very important that we thank them. If you are an ONTARIO resident please write to your local Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). Let them know that you support Bill 50, but it must include comprehensive zoo regulations and standards to bring Ontario from "worst to first" in animal protection. We have prepared a template letter but please take time to personalize it.
